Buses:
There is a short supply of Buses on Phuket, this seems to be because the owners other forms of transport blockade the streets when the local Government tries to increase their numbers. Numerous road and airport blockings have occurred in the passed and no doubt will happen again.
You can get to Phuket City by bus from all the main beach resorts but not to other beach resorts unless the beach you want to go to is on the bus route to Phuket City.
There is no bus from Patong to Kata, Karon or Kamala towns, which is one of the most lucrative trips for other forms of four wheel transport. This is due to the actions described above.

Scuba Dive Phuket Information - Getting Around Phuket.

Motorbike:

This is the main and most pleasurable form of getting around Phuket. Motorbikes can be easily rented by the day or for any other length of time at reasonable rates. It seems you can hire almost anything from a 50 cc runaround scooter to a 1000 cc super bike from almost any Thai you meet, but your hotel or a specialist rental shop is your safest bet.

More information on renting motorbikes.

Taxi:

Taxis are the safest way of seeing all that Phuket has to offer. You can hire a driver by the day or for a single trip. Day rental is the most cost effective with the driver taking you to all the best known sights of Phuket and some that you’ve not read about in your guide book, maybe including the drivers family restaurant or shop, but don’t be put off by this as it will give you an insight in to Phuket and Thai life that holidaymaker's rarely see.

Tuk Tuk:

These bright red open sided mini taxi/buses are either a handy little runaround or a pain in the butt. They clog the streets of Patong, making forward motion at times impossible, stopping to drop off customers or slowing down in the middle of the road to beep-beep their horns at any likely or unlikely walking Westerner in sight. They are parked at every street corner and line any stretch of road available and the drivers incessantly ask the same question Tuk-Tuk, Tuk-Tuk until you become either annoyed or immune to the question.

Motorbike Taxi:

A quick, easy and cheaper alternative to the Tuk-Tuk, is the also abundant Motorbike Taxi.

Care should be taken when using their services as you may not be given a crash helmet for the trip (now compulsory). The drivers are all highly skilled bike riders and go mostly at a sedate pace to suite the customer on the back seat, big or small, drunk or sober, nervous or not. Great way of getting around for short trips.

Make sure you know the price for the trip beforehand and whether it is for the return journey too, and maybe check the driver has not had a Drink or Three.

Having said that, they serve their purpose well, and you will find they are cheapish and plentiful.
