General Info

Info for Female Holiday makers:
Female holiday makers should not except invitations from Thai males to walk the beach at night. Many instances all over Thailand of rape and murder by more than one man have happened where this has been the case, so therefore it must be avoided at all cost.
The Monarchy:
Please do not at any time consider deriding the Thai Royal Family. Thai people have a deep, traditional reverence for the Royal Family, and a visitor should be very careful to show respect for the King, Queen and the Royal Children.
Religious Considerations:
Visitors should dress neatly in all religious shrines. They should never go topless, or in shorts, hot pants or other unsuitable attire. It is acceptable to wear shoes when walking around the compound of a Buddhist temple, but not inside the chapel where the principal Buddha image is kept. Each Buddha image, large or small, ruined or not, is regarded as a sacred object.
Never climb onto one to take a photograph or do anything which might be considered a lack of respect.
Buddhist monks are forbidden to touch or be touched by a woman, or to accept anything from the hand of one. If a woman has to give anything to a monk, she first hands it to a man, who then presents it.
Social Norms:
Thais don't normally shake hands when they greet one another, but instead press the palms together in a prayer-like gesture called a Wai. Generally a younger person Wais an elder, who returns it.
Thais regard the head as the highest part of the body, literally and figuratively.
Therefore avoid touching people on the head and try not to point your feet at people
or an object. It is considered very rude. Shoes should be removed when entering a
private Thai home.
Public displays of affection between men and women are frowned
upon.
Personal Safety:
Phuket is a safe place to be if you observe all normal precautions as regards to personal safety, as well as the safety of your belongings. Walking alone on quiet streets or deserted areas at night is not recommended. Be sure that all your valuables, money, jewellery, and airline tickets are properly protected from loss.
Visitors needing assistance relating to safety, unethical practices, or other matters, please call the Tourist Police Telephone: 1155.
Motorbike and Car Rental Agreements:
Rental agreements should be read and fully understood before being signed. No insurance is offered and if you have an accident, you, as a foreigner ARE responsible for ALL costs for ALL parties involved even if the accident was not your fault. Your passport details or even your passport itself will be taken on rental, and in the event of any problems, will be given to the Police, whom it must be said, will without fail, support any claim against you. Check the tax sticker for details and get helmets for ALL motorbike riders including pillions.
Police Road blocks:
Police set regular road blocks for motorbike riders, anybody (mostly foreigners) found without a driver licence, helmet (including pillion), tax sticker for the bike, will be find regardless. Licences or the motorbike will be impounded until fines have been paid. Note that this may add the price of another 2/3 days rental.
Sexual Health Warning:
Phuket and Patong especially, has a Devil may care attitude that can get the better of some. HIV/AIDS and all other sexually transmitted diseases are rife here as in all Thai holiday areas. Possible life saving action should be taken when out and about drinking in the bars and nightclubs of Phuket. If you do find yourself in the company of a Thai working girl/boy the use of Condoms is Mandatory.
Please protect yourself as you would at home.
Drugs:
Do not get involved with drugs. Penalties for drug offences are very Hard in Thailand and Capital Punishment is in place for the most severe cases.
